Poe was hugely influential. He invented the psychological horror story, the detective story, and science fiction. Through his tales and verse as well as his literary criticism, he made major contributions to the development of the modern short story and modern poetry. Because of the translations of French writer Charles Baudelaire, Poe became a much-admired author in Europe. His work influenced not only writers, but avant-garde artists, who saw in him a kindred soul.
