In this tale set on a Missouri farm in the 1920s, a young girl discovers that her legs are too long for the family's washtub. Mama insists that there is no money for a new one, so Donna and her siblings take matters into their own hands. They need $9.25 plus $1.50 for shipping to order a real bathtub from Sears, Roebuck. After rejecting several ideas, the children decide to grow cucumbers to sell to the local pickle factory. They get the seeds, plant them, care for the vines, and finally pick and sell the cucumbers. When they count the money, they discover that they are 10 cents short. Fortunately, Donna's little brother saves the day by contributing his Christmas dime.
